Bill was an immensely popular harness racing man, whose enthusiasm and affability was infectious to all he met. Bill was a life member of the BHRC and Harness Breeders Victoria and he and wife Margaret were principals of Homevale Stud at Fern Hill. The Hanson's stood many stallions including Ardri, Dick Adios , Shadow Star, Digger Almahurst among othersand in 1990 purchased the legendary Maori’s Idol for stud duties, where he stayed until his death in 2006. Bill was an inaugural inductee into the VHRMA Hall of Fame in 2009. Officials from Bendigo and Mildura harness racing clubs spoke glowingly of Bill and his association with the sport. Mildura Club Manager Mark Kemp said Bill and Margaret would never miss a Mildura Cup Carnival. “They’d roll into town on the Monday and catch up with friends and they’d stay the whole week. Then they’d go home after the cup night on the Sunday,” Kemp said. “They formed very strong bonds with many up here in Mildura over the years.” Bill and Margaret would sponsor the Mildura Trotters’ Cup for several years and in 2013 the race was named in their honour. Bill also had a long and loyal association with the Bendigo Harness Racing Club, where he was a life member. Bendigo harness racing stalwart Des Rothacker, a long-time friend of Bill, said he would be missed. “He was very committed,” Rothacker said. “He requested Maori’s Idol be buried at the track. Just as you go into the club (entry gates) you can see a placard on the fence there about Maori’s Idol. That was at Bill’s request and the club was only too pleased to do it. “He had a lot of friends here. He donated a free service to one of his stallions for many years. “He enjoyed life and was a very good bloke and very good friend.” HRV CEO John Anderson said: “The industry is saddened to hear of Bill Hanson’s passing. He was a great friend of harness racing in Victoria and will be sorely missed. HRV sends its condolences to Margaret and family.” (With the files of HRV)
8 June 2014 - Last year 26-year-old Christchurch-born Amanda Grieve returned to Australia after serving an 'apprenticeship' with master NZ horseman Tony Herlihy. Last night at Lord's Raceway Bendigo, Grieve let everyone know she was in business as a trainer, harnessing up her first race winner, Tandias Bromac in the Empire Stallions Super Series 4yo Vicbred mares, 1st heat. The Thompson Bloodstock owned daughter of Art Major that stems from the same family as Bendigo great Mother Courage led all the way to win the Stakes heat impressively for driver Chris Alford in a MR of 1.58.1 for the 2150 metre distance. Glenferrie Shuffle (Jodi Quinlan) charged home for second with Im Smouldering in third place. But the night belonged to former Dean Braun stable employee Grieve, a young lady described by Herlihy who was her boss and mentor for 8 years as "one of his most valued workers." Grieve has had plenty of good teachers including her father Paul and and on leaving school she had a good grounding with Paul Fitzpatrick in New South Wales and with (Uncle) Dennis Wilson. Greive went to NZ to watch Elsu win the 2005 Inter Dominion at Alexandra Park and got a job with Herlihy where she had many highlights working at his Ardmore barn. "I got to work with so many good horses like Western Dream, Ohoka Punter and of course One Over Kenny. She was my favourite," Grieve told harnesslink. Grieve did a lot of the behind-the-scenes work with One Over Kenny and rated her second Rowe Cup win as a career highlight. "She was also the first trotting mare to win $1 million. I loved that horse. I'll never forget her," Grieve said. Grieve has also worked as a starter's assistant for six years and on premier nights can be seen leading the horses back into the bird cage. 8 June 2014 - Dual Group 1 winner Brunelleschi dominated the 2014 Bendigo Bank Bendigo Trotters Cup at Lord's Raceway Saturday night exploding away over the final 400 metres to win by more than 6 metres. Back in top form for trainer/driver Amy Tubbs and backing up from last week's slashing third to Keystone Del in last week's John Slack Memorial Cup at Ballarat, Brunelleschi raced outside the race leader for most of the 2650 metre trip before Tubbs hit the "go button" approaching the final bend. Brunelleschi raced away with a Cup winning lead while local hope Stephen John (Graeme Maher) was held up in traffic after racing three back on the marker pegs most of the way. Stephen John used the sprint lane to charge home into second place with last weeks NSW Marathon winner Tsonga (David Moran) putting in his usual tradesman-like performance to finish third. Amy Tubb's sister Jess was on hand to collect the winners silver Cup on behalf of her mother Kate who races Brunelleschi, now the winner of 13 of his 26 starts. Brunelleschi is by Tennotrump from Box Brownie and breeder Michael Pangrazio of Staffordshire Park was on track and was called upon by the Club to rug the Cup winner. Other feature race winners last night were Tiavons Dream (3yo Trot Classic), Frankie Valley (Bendigo Guineas), Tandias Bromac (4yo Vicbred SS) and Sketchman (2yo Vicbred SS) - (David Aldred)
16 May 2014 - Huntly trainer Darren Manton steered home his first ever winner and his horse 7yo Prettyboyearl also won its first race at Ballarat last Saturday night. Manton, a trainer and father of young driver Ash and junior Pony Trot driver Joe was having only his 13th career drive and in his own words "silenced some critics" with the Ballarat Pony Trots Victoria Trot victory. Problem horse and late bloomer Prettyboyearl scored by more than 6 metres from Herecomeskayla (Jim O'Sullivan) after overcoming a break at the start and having to race outside the leader. "He (Prettyboyearl) has been a bit of a handful," Manton said. "I've been driving him and some of my others horses in trials to try and sort them out, but the only way to find out what's really going wrong is to drive them in a race." "This horse has taken three years so he has been a project." Prettyboyearl was having just his sixth race start and started at odds of $3.00. Manton who was in earthmoving full time before taking ill in recent years decided to get his drivers licence last year. "I just didn't have the time or couldn't commit to driving when I was working full time," he said. It was fitting that Manton won his first race in the Pony Trots Victoria sponsored trotting race as the Manton family are great Pony Trot supporters. Darren's wife Debbie, his mum Marg and sons Ash and Joe all play a role in the success of Victoria's Pony Trots.
2 May 2014 - Bendigo trained trotter Queens Vacation closed the Ballarat meeting last night with a bang, winning the last race on the card by more than 50 metres. The mare driven by Chris Alford did plenty wrong early in the race but motored away from her opposition on the final lap. Trained by Paul Campbell at Maiden Gully, Queens Vacation, a 4yo by Dream Vacation, broke at the start, raced fiercely, hung out in the straight the first time and then withstood a protest before being posted as the winner. The winning margin was officially 50.4 metres and most punters who backed the $1.50 favourite would have struggled to recall another horse winning by such a big margin having to withstand an objection. But, with good reason the driver of 80-1 shot Long Story Short protested on the grounds his horse was inconvenienced. Consideration was given by the stewards to a protest lodged by John Kelly, trainer/driver of 2nd placegetter Long Story Short, alleging that the eventual winner Queens Vacation (Chris Alford) had gained an advantage and caused interference to Long Story Short when it galloped shortly after the start. Upon consideration of the evidence tendered by both drivers and the available replays it was established that when Queens Vacation broke it had maintained its ground initially for a short distance, when its driver was having difficulty restraining the mare, before Queens Vacation ultimately lost ground thereafter before returning to its correct gait as Stewards could not be satisfied that Queens Vacation had gained an advantage to the detriment of any other runner, bearing in mind the 50m margin between Queens Vacation (1st) and Long Story Short (2nd) , the protest was dismissed and All Clear given on the Judge’s numbers. Given that the winner galloped for the first 200m of the race and still settled in the middle of the field the protest was justified under the rules of racing.

From Len Baker’s Sulky Snippets Maryborough: October 20 Popular Huntly trainer Barry Quigley was successful with 5-Y-0 Armbro Operative/Urban Scooter mare Shes Even Cooler in the Waste Not Stockfeeders Pace for R0 & R1 class over 1690 metres. It was the 2010 Chariots Of Fire winner, Villagem's first race win since September 2012 and the 8yo gelding's first for its new stable. Villagem tracked three wide at the bell before assuming control of the race on the final circuit and holding off a strong late finish from the 2011 Ladyship Mile winner. The winning mile rate was a slick 1.57.3 for the 2150metres. Owner Des Lingard was at Lord's Raceway to collect the Cup presented by Sportsmen's Association president Jim Harvey). Other trophy winners were I Dream It (David Abrahams/Daryl Douglas) in the Braidies Tavern Community Trot Country Series Final; Paris Pepperell (David Van Ryn/ Hayden Gray) in the Elmore Events Community Cup Trot and Extremely Efficient (Tony Peacock/Nathan Jack) in the Champions IGA Community Cup Pace. Local reinsman Daryl Douglas was the leading driver at the meeting with a winning treble, steering home the victors in three of the first four races. RELATED STORY
