Menin Gate is Marvellous!
The Larry Eastman trainer 3yo Menin Gate continued his rise to the top of Australasian 3yo pacers with a dominant front of the field win in the Queensland Derby at Albion Park, Brisbane on Saturday night.

Menin Gate has now claimed the Victoria, Gold Coast and Queensland Derbys plus the Vicbred Super Series Final this term. Watch Menin Gate win the Queensland Derby. Lightly raced four year old Yankee Paco/Maybe Hall gelding Maybetothemax was a most impressive victor of the Bendigo Party Hire Trotters Mobile (1st Heat) for T1 & T2 class over 2150 metres at Lord’s Raceway Bendigo on Tuesday July 14.
Trained at Kyabram by Graham Lyon who loves the squaregaiters, Maybetothemax coming off an excellent second to Im Stately in the Empire Stallions Vicbred Super Sires Series Final at Tabcorp Park Melton eleven days earlier and making his 21st race appearance, possied one/one from gate five with the well supported Pipe Me Home shadowing the poleline pacemaker Law Legend. The short priced favourite Gus An Maori (gate four) missed away hopelessly.Vacating the prime spot shortly after the start to race in the open,
Nathan Jack was able to dictate the terms of the race to suit and Maybetothemax raced past the leader prior to the home turn under a tight hold. Although Lightning Calder (three wide last lap from last) tried hard on turning, Maybetothemax bounded clear halfway up the running to record a 7.6 metre victory over Lightning Calder, with rank outsider Illawong Sunny 1.8 metres away in third place.
The mile rate 2-02.5 on the rain effected track. Graham Lyon enjoyed plenty of success in the eighties with a horse by the name of Northsea Rover and at one stage had champion mare Claudys Princess under his care, winning the Two Year Old Vicbred Super Series Final.
Heat two will be held at Ballarat this Saturday, with the $8505 Final at Tabcorp Park Melton on July 26.
Echuca trainer/driver Steven Lindberg provided a shock result to the Dunlop & Pitson Earthmoving Pace for C2 class over 2150 metres, when speedy seven year old Christian Cullen/Time’s On My Side gelding Bon Jovi saluted the judge at $18.50.
Crossing the long odds-on poleline favourite Padrisimo at the start from gate five, Bon Jovi led all of the way and although headed by Mrs Devine in the shadows of the post after racing outside him, came again to gain the day by a head in 2-01.9.
Padrisimo was quite disappointing in finishing third after having the entire length of the sprint lane, going down by 1.6 metres.
It was Bon Jovi’s first victory since November 2013.
Hopetoun Park father and son – Ross and Greg Sugars snared the Santons Of Bendigo Claiming Pace over 1650 metres with P B Bullville/Pleasant Speed seven year old gelding Rumsron in a rate of 1-57.6 in driving rain, much to the delight of Bacchus Marsh part-owner Denis Grieve.Spearing away from gate five, Rumsron led throughout to account for Our Mels Dream (three wide last lap) and Our Horizon which faced the breeze from outside the front line.
Long Forest duo Andy & Kate Gath appeared set on paper to have a great night, but only snared only one winner – smart Majestic Son/Starcus Me filly Naked Majesty in the Aldebaran Park Trotters Mobile for T0 & T1 class over 2150 metres.Beginning smoothly from the extreme draw to lob three back in the moving lane, Kate wasted no time in sending the filly forward to park outside Miss Cosmos Travelling sweetly, Naked Majesty put pay to her rivals on turning to record a 3.1 metre margin on the wire over Mont Morley (three wide home turn after trailing the leader), with Miss Cosmos holding down third.
Seymour’s Billy Morgan combined with Gavin Lang to land the Yorkshire Park Standardbreds Pace for C0 class over 2150 metres with four year old Pay Me Christian/Arma Class gelding Arma Augustus.Given a sweet passage one/one from gate three, Arma Augustus after being eased three wide on the final bend, prevailed in the last bound to nose out the leader Nikita Maguire in 2-00.5, with Three Mugs In (one/two) running his usual honest race to finish third after making the home turn four wide.
Kiwi bred Bettor’s Delight/Millwood Touche filly Millwood Brandy at start number eleven, snared the Bush’s Produce 3-Y-0 Pace over 2150 metres for Melton duo Maree and John Caldow, leading all of the way from the pole to just last by a nose from Shakahari along the sprint lane from three back the markers which would have given Bill Morgan a double. Abetta Tiny Dancer was 2.5 metres away in third place after racing uncovered from the bell. The mile rate 2-00.4.
Woorinen (Swan Hill) trainer Joe Costa has enjoyed a most fruitful season with his small but select team, taking out the Amadee Park Vineyard Pace for C3 & C4 class over 1650 metres with ultra-consistent 3-Y-0 Million Dollar Cam/What About Now gelding Riley James in a slick 1-57.2.
Driven by Ararat freelance Michael Bellman who hardly ever misses a meeting throughout the state, Riley James led throughout from the pole to score by 1.7 metres in advance of Givemeaspell which trailed and a death-seating Time Capsule.
On a night when leading was the place to be, Heathcote trainer Jason Tyack made a welcome return to the winners list when Courage Under Fire/Realy Dry 5-Y-0 gelding Realy Under Fire with Scott Rains in the sulky, led throughout from gate four to blitz his rivals in the Samios Plumbing Supplies Pace for C1 class over 1650 metres, scoring by 6.6 metres in 1-58.9 metres from the favourite Our Danger Mouse which raced outside him for the final circuit. Olivia Rockstar (four wide home turn from last) was 6.2 metres away in third place.

Bendigo to Benefit
Bendigo Cup and Maori Mile Date Changes
Bendigo Cup and Maori Mile now on Saturday, February 13th
The Bendigo Harness Racing Club is set to reap several key benefits from Harness Racing Victoria’s Summer Of Glory re-structuring, which was announced last week.
The re-structuring of the Carnival became necessary because of the New South Wales Racing Club’s decision to move it’s Summer Carnival into February, thereby creating a clash between it’s Miracle Mile Qualification Races and Victoria’s Hunter Cup.
In order to obtain the best result for all Victorian Harness Clubs and Industry Participants involved in the Summer Of Glory Carnival, a number of Clubs have agreed to move their Cup Fixtures to new dates.
“To compensate for this, Clubs will be offered a range of stake increases for their respective feature races, as well as a number of other associated benefits” said Harness Racing Victoria CEO Mr. John Anderson. “These changes will hopefully see many of the top horses make Victoria’s Summer Of Glory Carnival their key focus”, he went on to say.
Under the new plan the Group 2 2016 PetStock Bendigo Pacing Cup will now be run on Saturday, February 13th, with prizemoney increased from $50,000 to $60,000. To further complement the Cup Program, the 2016 Aldebaran Park Maori Mile will also be elevated to Group 1 status, with prize-money increasing from $30,000 to $50,000. This will enable the Group 1 Albebaran Park Maori Mile to serve as a perfect lead-up race for Australasia’s best trotters – and possibly some international entries – to the $400,000 Great Southern Star Series on March 12th.
Harness Racing Victoria has also agreed to look at programming some Metro Class races on the Cup Program. “All this should ensure Bendigo has one of the best quality Cup Programs it has had in many years”, Mr. Anderson said.
Some further funding assistance will also be provided to the Bendigo Club to assist in promoting the new Cup Date, and is part of a three year deal negotiated between HRV and the Bendigo Club.
Bendigo Club President, Mr. Paul Best, said that this arrangement was a positive result for the Club. “Whilst moving the Bendigo Cup out of the lucrative January holiday period is not ideal, the opportunity to move the Aldebaran Park Maori Mile to Group 1 status and attract the best trotters in the land to Bendigo, as well as some metro class horses, is a huge bonus”, he said.
“Whilst we may lose some top horses, trainers and drivers to the New South Wales Summer Carnival, we should still be able to attract a very even and high quality Cup Field from the horses who raced through the Victoria and Hunter Cups”, he went on to say. “The funding assistance from HRV will also enable the Club to effectively market the new Cup Date and structure to the public, so hopefully the Club will be able to attract an even bigger crowd than last year.”
“The Bendigo Club is also pleased to have been able to co-operate and work with HRV to obtain the best overall outcome for the Industry, it’s participants and the Club”, Mr. Best said in conclusion.

Olivia Stars Again !
Shortly after receiving the May Bush's Produce Trainer of the Month award from BHRC Commitee member Kirsten Graham, trainer driver Trevor Hilson declared that his mare Olivia Rockstar would be spelled after competing in the Elder's Real Estate Pace.
Trevor then took Olivia Rockstar onto the track for the event over 1609 metres.
We doubt if Olivia will be heading for the spelling paddock after she came from last on the home turn to win in a blistering mile rate of 1.56.2, paying $34.20 on the Tote.
This is her second win in the last four starts.

Racetrack Surface Replaced
The racetrack surface at Lord's Raceway was replaced last week, with HRV track insurance covering the cost of the project.
Harness Racing Victoria's Racetrack Maintenance Supervisor Graeme Maher, along with Lord's Raceway assistant curator Tom Byrne, and BHRC Committee member Peter Svanosio spent the best part of 5 days at the track.
left: Some of the 2000 tonnes of crushed granite
The track base, severly damaged during torrential rains in January was completely removed and spread on the inside training track. Then over 2000 tonnes of crushed granite from Axedale Quarries was spread by a state of the art GPS computer controlled spreader, rolled and conditioned to form a new track base.
Then over 210 tonnes of surface grit was spread to finish the job.
On Sunday night , 9 races were run at the Elmore@Bendigo Restricted meeting. The first race, was run in 1:58:4. Five races later, another, a heat of a 4YO pace was run in 1:54:8 , with the horses racing on a surface where you barely heard them passing.

Amazing Breeding Feat...3 Generations winning APG heats, and competing in finals
Garry, Melva and Kirsten Graham, breeders at their property right next door to Lord's Raceway are rightfully proud of the marvellous broodmare Sister Dancer (What's Next - Classic Kate) .
Kirsten Graham reports:
Sister Dancer achieved a feat a don't think any other broodmare would have achieved Saturday night April 10, with Magical Delight winning an APG heat at Tabcorp Park, Melton Sister Dancer won a 2yo fillies APG heat in 1998 and ran third in the final.
Eleven years later Sister Dancer's daughter, Modern Girl, won two heats and ran 2nd in the final. The following year Sister Dancer's son Royal Verdict won a heat and also the final.
Magical Delight is Modern Girl's daughter, so Sister Dancer's granddaughter, which makes three generations (grandmother, mother and daughter) to win an APG heat and compete in the final.

Inaugural Bendigo Hotel's Night a Success
Last Wednesday night's Bendigo Hotel Night was a great sucess. Big thanks to publicans and their patrons who filled the tables in the Raceview Restaurant, and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
A Bit Ruthless and Grand Voyage
Fr. Brian Glasheen, the Pacing Priest and his Famous Family
A Bit Ruthless Favourite in Race 5 tonight at Lord's Raceway
After over 40 years in the priesthood you could be forgiven for thinking that Fr Brian Glasheen has known only one life but that’s not the case at all.
The Parish Priest at Bacchus Marsh bred and races the promising pacer A Bit Ruthless, a winner to date of seven races and $37,000 racing at Bendigo this Wednesday night. A Bit Ruthless is the most recent from a line of pacers bred and raced by Fr. Glasheen,
Growing up in Preston, Glasheen successfully completed high school and was offered an engineering job with a road contracting group, who had been assigned to build the 1956 Olympic Village in Heidelberg West.
He began studying Civil Engineering part-time and after three years as a cadet he helped to form a new company. The new venture was no failure, as within five years they went from 8 employees to 25 plus sub-contractors, however the calling for priesthood was still in the back of Glasheen’s mind. He began at Corpus Christie in Werribee in 1964 and finished up his eight years of training by being ordained in Ballarat.
The priesthood is not the only life of Father Glasheen as he is somewhat of a celebrity in the harness racing sport, with a family steeped in greatness. It’s obvious that he still enjoys going to the trots whenever he can.
His grandfather Paddy Glasheen based at Belmont Farm, Pitt St. Huntly, was a leading reinsmen in Victoria, training and driving driving one of the out and out champions of sport, the Hall of Fame trotter Grand Voyage in the 1920’s. Glasheen’s father, Jack Glasheen, continued the legacy and trained trotters in Preston winning many races at the old Melbourne Showgrounds track. Father Glasheen also drove a winner, the trotter San Adios at Healesville in 1963.
He acquired the title “The Pacing Priest, by way of a journalist called Danny Power. In 1978 he wrote an article in the Sporting Globe to help to promote the first Harness Racing Mass in Australia. Father Glasheen is usually on hand to bless the starters in the annual Interdominion Championship, but missed last November’s Sydney event due to surgery.
Father Glasheen has been the custodian of the nearly 100 year old racing sulky, acquired in 1921 in New Zealand by his grandfather Paddy, when Grand Voyage beat a field of top class pacers, in the prestigious Otahuhu Cup at the Auckland track, worth an £ 1000.
Grand Voyage also won the first Boort Cup, among his 37 victories. Last weekend at the Boort Cup meeting, Fr Brian Glasheen handed the family sulky over to the Bendigo Harness Racing Club, to be part of the Memorabilia and History Collection that the club is growing at Lord’s Raceway. Grand Voyage’s historic racing sulky, photos and articles from the 1920’s will be on display in the Raceview Restaurant and TAB in the Lord’s Raceway grandstand on Wednesday.
And in race five on Wednesday night at Lord's Raceway,, the Schweppes Pacers Handicap, number seven, A Bit Ruthless, the latest in the long line of Glasheen horses has a chance to add to the Glasheen family’s amazing legacy.

What a Beauty: Bendigo Owner's Luck with Syndicated Stars
From Bendigo owner Tim Coates
I was introduced to harness racing in the 1990s by passionate harness racing identity Alan Prentice. We took a 10% share of leased horses that were trained in Bendigo by Gary Donaldson. We had quite a few wins, but raising four children with my wife Linda became a priority during that period of time.
in 2010 I was invited to join a syndicate to lease and race an Armbro Operative/Secret Life filly. We were also offered at share in a LIve or Die/Larrakeyah filly.
These were subsequently named Beauty Secret and The Good Times both trained at Ballarat by Emma Stewart. We were so pleased that we said yes to both.
They have since gone on to win over 40 races between them.
Beauty Secret ( pictured above) 53 starts: 24 wins , 9 seconds, 4 thirds for $391.336 to date
The Good Times: 47 starts, 17 wins, 7 seconds, 3 thirds for $178,004 to date.
The horses are owned by Bruce and Craig Cameron and Peter Gleeson.
Since purchasing a 10% share in both "Beauty" and "Goodie" the Camerons have bred and extended their stable to 12 horses with many more foals and yearlings to follow.
Other horses to do well include:
Major Secret: 20 starts, 10 wins, 4 seconds, 2 thirds, including the 2014 NSW Pacer's Derby, and the 2015 Central Victorian Championship.
Lovelist:10 starts, 6 wins, 1 third
Punchline: 21 starts,, 11 wins, three seconds and three thirds
I get so much pleasure in watching syndicate members involvement in following the horses, and we have made so many new friends in NSW, South Australia and closer to home in Victoria.
Yes, we have been very fortunate, and we have had our fair share of luck. But the buzz and enjoyment of just one winner, your horse going over the line first is hard to put into words.
Leasing a horse with friends is a great way for social interaction, and may provide you with many fantastic moments and memories at the track.

Menin Gate wins Derby ( with information from Cody Winell at HRV)
Rural Shelbourne has no place to celebrate Menin Gate's win in the event that started in 1914, Larry Eastman's star owned at Birchip, was very the first win by a Bendigo district trainer in the time honoured event. Area trainers Keith Cotchin Elmore, Bill Davies and Jack Moore Maryborough trained winners,
The Larry Eastman trained son of Somebeachsomewhere out of Dreams Of Heaven won the early speed duel to find the lead in the 2240-metre race, driver Chris Alford spearing him to the pegs from gate six after pocket rocket Justbritell initially led.
Race favourite Follow The Stars with Mark Purdon in the cart followed Alford across and settled second, with Artistic Flite one-one and Justbritell happy to grab the leader’s back.
They stayed in that formation for the bulk of the race before Art Union commenced a run down the back straight. But Art Union’s forward move was short lived when that horse and Artistic Flite locked wheels, which cost both runners any winning hope and also inconvenienced plenty of others.
Turning for home it was Menin Gate with a strong kick and Follow The Stars in hot pursuit.
The pair battled tooth and nail in the stretch but Alford was able to lift a bit more out of a gutsy Menin Gate, the Birchip crew absolutely ecstatic and roaring with excitement as they won by 2.7m. Follow The Stars was gutsy but no match for the winner, while Spare Me Days finished third and Justbritell was consistent as usual in fourth.
Menin Gate's mile rate was 1:56.2.

Good Samaritans...Thanks Ashley and Ricky
Saheed Tries TrotsVisiting Nigerian cricketer Saheed Akolade tried his hand at driving a trotter at the Bendigo Harness Racing meeting at Lord's Raceway last night.
Saheed, who played his first game for Emu Valley team Spring Gully last Saturday was tutored by leading concession driver Josh Duggan, in the Harness Racing Training Centre Bendigo's double sulky pulled by the Danny O'Bree owned and Clinton McSwain trained Cootas Tooth. Cootas Tooth, now retired from racing, won his last start at Bendigo in July 2014, and won 7 races. He is used by Clinton to educate his young horses. Queens Vacation trots in Slick Time at KilmoreBendigo (Maiden Gully) trainer Paul Campbell’s Dream Vacation/Queens Rhapsody five-year-old mare Queens Rhapsody was a tough winner of the Morning Melodies @ Trackside Trotters Mobile for T1 & T2 class over 2180 metres at Kilmore yerteday,Tuesday, February 3.
Taking a mares concession, Queens Vacation, driven on this occasion by Gavin Lang, settled in the “sweet-seat” from outside the front row, but again wouldn’t settle, pulling very hard with Katmandonny leading from gate five. Sent forward three-wide racing for the bell, Queens Rhapsody had little luck as Zoomas Legend outside the pacemaker kept her wide. Given full rein to lead on the final bend, Queens Rhapsody appeared to be a sitting target for the hot favourite Left Right Andcentre, which had the drop on her, however the former found plenty in the run to the wire, scoring by 6.3 metres in a slick 2:00.8 for that class. Maori Time ends Keystone Del's streak in Maori Mile, Smashing Track Record
Maori Time produced a scintillating track-record run to end Keystone Del’s winning streak and take the Aldebaran Park Maori Mile at Bendigo tonight.
Trained and driven by masterful educator of squaregaiters Chris Lang, Maori Time, a five-year-old mare by Pegasus Spur out of Sundonna, took off at the 800m employing catch-me-if-you-can tactics – and her rivals couldn’t. She had led from the pole draw but when she hit top gear mid-race, no one was going to nab her.

Bendigo Pony Club's Night Out at the Trots at Lord's Raceway
Members of the Bendigo Pony Club enjoyed a night out at the ChristmasTrots at Lord's Raceway on Thursday night. December 11.
After having a delicious meal together in the Bistro, they gathered in the Committee Room for "Harness Racing 101" ( what's going on here?) with BHRC Commitee Member Noel Ridge.
They watched horses, drivers, clerks of course, stewards, starter, vet and all those who have a role in a race get ready for Race 7.
They saw the Chris Alford driven Goodtime Marjie win, much to the delight of many of the Pony Clubbers who had selected the horse to win based on its warmup.
After the race they went to the stable area and watched while horses were unharnessed, and cooled down.
Your club could have a Harness Racing 101 experience at Lord's Raceway by phoning BHRC on 5449 3205
