2 April 2012 - The end of a wonderful era came recently with the passing of Horsham/Marong owned broodmare, Wide Glide.
The 24 year old daughter of Waverly Niatross and Bonnie Apollo was raced by Rosalie and Steve Dougherty from the time of her debut as a 2yo at Charlton in April 1990 through to her final outing at Globe Derby Park in November 1992.
Wide Glide was a pacer with just average ability but her career record of 56 starts for 5 wins and 20 minor placings bears testimony to both her consistency and honesty. Wide Glide produced her first foal for the Dougherty and Eastman (Larry & Lynette) families in September 1993 and the result of this mating with the much under-rated stallion Vestalba Rainbow, later raced as Jonathon and began what was to become an amazing legacy of winners. Johnathon (32 wins), Dee Ex (24), Seizenger (9), Lenny (18), Dougal (26), Schier Drive (1), Schier(2), Waterslide (8) and Georgefromguam (5) have collectively won 125 races and earned stakemoney of $512,000. None of her band were champions or even reached the elite level but they were marvelous “bread and butter horses” that owners & trainers love. Wide Glide produced 10 named foals, 9 of which raced with all being winners. Her only unraced progeny was the 2002 filly by Vestalba Rainbow which was aptly named Guessing. This now rising 10yo mare has produced a 2yo colt by the Alabar stallion Ponder along with a yearling colt by the former star performer Safari. I’m sure there will be plenty of interest if and when these two make it to the races. Waterslide and Georgefromguam are still racing and the Dougherty/Eastmans also have hopes for Wide Glide’s final offspring, a 2yo filly by Sealed N Delivered. Wide Glide - What a bonnie mare !
