10 April 2012 - Jukebox Music explodes to victory in the 2012 Warragul Pacing Cup. After several years of trying, Bendigo horseman Glenn Douglas won his first Rapidvite Warragul Pacing Cup today with Jukebox Music.
The six-year-old gelding galloped away at the start, but recovered to settle just off the pace, and was driven a well-judged race by Daryl Douglas to score by five metres. Twelve year old pacer Mister Douglas produced a Douglas quinella of sorts to finish second after leading, and Life Inthefastlane finished third. The win of Jukebox Music was a popular one, with the horse starting third favourite at around 11/2. The stable was confident of success, and Jukebox Music has now won 17 races from 84 starts for the Douglas brothers and owner Eric Anderson. It was the second country Cup triumph this season for the former Sydneysider, after a win in the Wedderburn Pacing Cup last December. The Eddie Evison Memorial Trotters Cup was taken out by Gentlemans Honour for trainer Michael Calaz, who has raced horses at Warragul for many years. In a close and exciting finish, Gentlemans Honour held his rivals at bay to score narrowly, when driven by Greg Sugars, who won last year's Warragul Pacing Cup with Johnorama. Gentlemans Honour hadn't won since May 2010, but had been runner-up at his two previous runs before Sunday and has now won 12 races from 58 starts. Local trainers collected two victories on the seven race card. Warragul trainer Des Hughes and the students of the Gippsland Harness Training Centre were rewarded for their patience when mare Drop Of Paradise won the third event. After a frustrating run of minor placings in recent weeks, Drop Of Paradise scored a narrow, and very popular win with the large crowd in attendance. Glenn Hunter drove Drop Of Paradise, who now has the outright lead in the Warragul Horse of the Year award with three meetings to run for the season. Scruffy Major gave trainers Gary and Debbie Quinlan their second successive win in the Warragul Guineas. The first leg of a driving double for Greg Sugars, Scruffy Major is owned by local stalwarts Gordon and June Turner, parents of Debbie Quinlan. Scruffy Major is another who had been most consistent of late, and now recorded three victories with six minor placings from just 13 starts. Talented filly Born Again Sassy scored her third straight victory in the Eastern Zone Pace against a strong field. The daughter of former brilliant pacing mare Sassy Sarah, herself a Warragul Pacing Cup placegetter, Born Again Sassy recorded a fast time in her victory. TAB holdings on-course exceeded last years mark, and the bumper crowd enjoyed a great day of entertainment in perfect weather conditions. The next Warragul harness racing meeting is on Thursday, May 24.
