24 March 2012 - Bendigo's Make Mine Cullen was awesome at last night's Tabcorp Park meeting notching her 33rd career victory in a slashing mile rate of 1:55.9, easily the fastest of the night.
With a headwind blowing, race times were not really a factor at the Breed for Speed Finals night but in true champion style the Glenn Douglas trained Make Mine Cullen's performance stood out, with the mare's 'tradesmanlike' performance earning her the victory over 2012 Bendigo Cup winner Decorated Jasper in the $20,000 Markovina FFA (2240m). Daryl Douglas made his move three-wide 1300 metres from home and took control down the straight to get the bell. Make Mine Cullen had to dig deep though with a 28.2 final quarter to stave off $3.40 favourite Decorated Jasper (Jodi Quinlan) who raced three wide and the late finisher Jaccka Clive (Scott Dyer who also came from the three wide line. A six-year-old Christian Cullen mare raced by Anderson Racing, Make Mine Cullen won by 1.3 metres. The mare's prizemeoney is now close to $700,000.
Optimum and Anne Maree Conroy kept their Monte record perfect winning the 1720 metre final. The duo also wion the two saddle race heats at Bendigo and Shepparton. Nagambie's Chris Lang stable starred on the big trotting night despite getting edged out in the Breed for Speed Gold Trotting Mares final. David Aiken's Cold Sister, the USA bred, Clive Palmer (Cold Mountain Stud) owned mare that survived last years Queensland floods scored a neck victory over the Lang trained Dealornodeal and Topnoptch Dream to take out the Lyn McPherson Memorial Group 2 race. Chris Lang trained horses collected victories in each of the other feature trotting races, the Breed for Speed Silver Series final, the Breed for Speed Bronze Series final, the Princess of Speed and the Prince of Speed giving Aldebaran Park a quartet of feature races wins. Daryl Douglas steered the Lang trained Yankee Paco mare Class Of Her Own to victory in the Bronze final, Chris Lang jr. piloted Aldebaran Shades to win the Prince of Speed and Jr again led all the way to win the Silver final on Amelia Darling.
