Calder to Blitz in Bendigo Trot Tatlow Heat
22 May 2012 - With five wins in a row, 2yo trotter Blitzthemcalder looks like he is well and truly on a highway to success.
On Thursday night Lara trainer Ross Payne will make his way up the Calder Highway to start his juvenile star in the first heat of the Tatlow Stakes at Bendigo’s Lord’s Raceway. The striking black colt is no stranger to travel, winning his last four races in New South Wales, three at Tabcorp Park, Menangle and one at Coolamon. Those victories included a 2yo Trot record time at Menangle and have netted Calder Park's Ric Burchell the bulk of Blitzthemcalder’s $20,000 bank. The Tatlow Heat at Bendigo carries a Stake of $6,000 but the big payout will come if he can carry his winning streak into the $30,000 Final at Tabcorp Park Melton on June 1. Blitzthemcalder has been a standout 2yo Trotter this season, his performances highlighted by the fact that he is by a pacing stallion, Metropolitan, a son of The Panderosa. But Blitzthemcalder’s calling was always going to be trotting when you take a look at his mother’s side of the family. Like A Calder, his dam, is a half sister to the outstanding trotter Calder Sensation, being a daughter of Maoris Dream which as the name suggests stems from the outstanding Maori Miss line that has given Victorian trotting a string of top trotters including arguably the State’s best ever squaregaiter Maoris Idol. At Bendigo, Blitzthemcalder will be reunited with driver Leigh Sutton who started the trotters winning sequence at Ballarat on 29 March. Sutton will be glad to be back in the bike behind the noted speedstar. Blitzthemcalder has won just about all of his races from the front and his outside of the front row draw in the 2150 metre mobile should have him well placed for another catch me if you can dash. Drawn on his inside is the last start winner Ainsdale, an Alex Douglas trained Pegasus Spur filly who is likely to seek a trail, while Blitzthemcalder’s main opposition the Armbro Invasion gelding Invasive, trained by Lance Justice, will start from the inside of the second row. The Blitzthemcalder form line will carry over to the second Heat of the Tatlow Stakes with the two top chances in this race both runner up to the juvenile star at recent outings. Local, Sun of Sonoko, a gelding by Sundon, trained by Ross Graham at Sedgwick, travelled to Coolamon (NSW) to finish second to Blitzthemcalder on Anzac Day before following that result with an all the way win at Maryborough, beating Invasive by a head last week. The Lisa Miles trained Roy Hobbs, a Great Success gelding, also has a good lead in to this race after finishing second to Blitzthemcalder when he was a $2.50 Ballarat favourite at his only race start on 29 March. - David Aldred
