Mares sizzle at Bendigo's Breed for Speed
Trainer Michelle Eastman working Aleppo Midas
12 March 2012 - Quick miles and star trotting mares heralded the start of the 2Construct Lyn McPherson Memorial Breed For Speed Series at Lord's Raceway Bendigo on Saturday.
A blistering mile in the Silver Heat by Aleppo Midas almost upstaged the Gold Series Heat but trotting perfectly boom New Zealander Dealornodeal made the race her own with the Chris Lang trainee signaling that she will be the one to beat in the $30,000 Final at Tabcorp Park on 23 March. At Bendigo, Heat One the Silver for Trotting Mares T1 to T3 over the true mile journey of 1609 metres, was brilliantly taken out by lightly raced 4-Y-0 Aleppo Midas for trainer Michelle Eastman who is based at Shellbourne, just south of Lockwood. A winner of two from seven going into the series, Aleppo Midas (Sundon/Insulated) driven by Chris Alford was given plenty of time to balance from gate three at the start, trailing Chris Lang’s Amelia Darling her conqueror from their last meeting at Cobram two weeks earlier three wide, before settling outside her racing for the bell. In splits of 29.4, 29.1, 28.9 and 29.2, Aleppo Midas raced clear on straightening to record a sizzling rate of 1-56.5 in defeating a game Amelia Darling by 10.8 metres, with Rockin Wilma using the sprint lane from mid-field in the moving line to finish third. The second heat, the Gold T4 or better class saw some quality mares competing, with boom New Zealander Dealornodeal from Chris Lang (Snr)’s Nagambie barn starting favourite after returning a rate of 1-55.5 at the recent Bendigo Time Trial Series. Restrained from gate six as the mobile pulled away with the pole marker Cold Sister beginning swiftly to lead from Drop Us A Line (gate five), Dealornodeal a 5-Y-0 daughter of Dream Vacation and Princess Della possied three back in the moving line. Set alight shortly after by Chris to lead at the bell, Dealornodeal in quarters of 29, 30.9, 29.1 and 29 recorded a rate of 1-57.9 in accounting for Cold Sister and Gluteus Maximus (three back the markers) without being pushed to the limit. Classy mare Miss Warbucks considered to be one of the hardest to beat throughout the series, galloped wildly at the start from outside the front row putting herself out of business. Further heats will be conducted at Shepparton next Saturday March 17. Connections of both mares collected a $500 bonus for each of the winners breaking the 1:59 mile.
In the Bendigo Bank Monte, Anne Maree Conroy continued her perfect form to win the 1650 metre standing start saddle race, riding Optimum. In a great display by all competitors Conroy rode the perfect race on the $3.40 favourite to win by over five metes. Crash Boom Bang (Ann-Jeanette Wolds) finished second with Kyvalley Mac (Gabriel McDonagh) rounding out the top three. The mile rate for The Monte was 2:07.5. The next Monte race will be at Shepparton with the final at Melton on Friday week. View the Monte race replay: CLICK HERE
