Chief Inanga to light up air waves for Bendigo radio man
Bryan 'Cogho' Coghlan
26 January 2011 - Radio Station Program Directors generally study the ratings with their target to attract the biggest listening audience possible but this week the harness racing form guide has taken precedence over the ratings charts for Bendigo Radio 3BO’s Program Director, Bryan Coghlan. The local media man has just one target in mind, winning the time-honoured $30,000 Warehouse Sales Central Victorian Championship Final at Lords Raceway on Thursday night with his latest acquisition Chief Inanga. Coghlan loves his harness racing and six months ago along with Andrew Curran and John Hazeldene, he became a co-owner of the six-year-old Mach Three gelding which has thrived under the tutorage of Huntly trainer/driver Anthony Crossland. Coghlan said that the foursome’s plans to win the Championship are coming together but he said;” the team is still very nervous”. Chief Inanga will start from the pole position in the Group 3 race which for the first time is being held at the Bendigo track. Coghlan credited Curran with selecting Chief Inanga. The owner of Grand Circuit performer Mysta Magical Mach, Curran has an eye for big race performers. Mysta Magical Mach was the runner up in this year’s WA Pacing Cup and winner of the WA Pacing Cup three years ago.Chief Inanga showed good form early in its career in New Zealand and Curran made the selection, hoping the pacer could advance its career here. Chief Inanga won his first four starts before a series of unplaced performances in New Zealand during the 2008/09 season. After a 12 month absence from the racetrack, Chief Inanga was an instant winner for Crossland on debut in Australia in the Donald Cup at Charlton last month. On 7 January the classically bred type made it two wins from just four local starts, winning the Warehouse Sales Central Victorian Pacing Championship Heat (2100m) at Charlton. In that race he was untroubled to lead from start to finish and score by five metres. “Anthony has done a terrific job with this horse, the Charlton wins were a massive buzz for all of us,” Coghlan said. “But it would be absolutely huge for us to win a prestigious race in our home town of Bendigo.” Chief Inanga has raced 45 times, winning six races and almost $55,000 in stakes. The first prize for the Central Victorian Championship is $20,250. Two other local pacers also made the Final field. Maiden Gully trained It And A Bit is in the starting line up and his stable mate Dual Agent Tabman is the first emergency. Both horses are harnessed up by Paul Campbell. The pacers were both placed third in their respective Central Victorian Pacing Championship heats. Daryl Douglas will drive It And A Bit, a recent Bendigo winner from the back row. Four-year-old Village Jasper gelding Arber is likely to line up as the Pacing Championship favourite. Armstrong trainer Brooke Hansen returned Arber to the races for its first start since August to win its Heat at Maryborough last week. The victory was Arber’s fifth from just starts. Chris Alford will drive Arber which will start from gate four. - David Aldred
Billy The Brat bounces back to win a place in Central Victorian Trot Final
Billy The Brat (Ian White) looms up to head off Mister Castleton in the Central Vic Heat
20 January 2011 - Bendigo's Billy The Brat has won a place in the $25,000 Final of the Warehouse Sales Central Victorian Trotting Championships to be raced at Lords Raceway Bendigo, next week. On Wednesday it was an all family affair for the White family of Huntly, Bill, the trainer, son Ian, a school teacher by profession and the race driver, Ian’s wife Susan, the owner and Ian’s cousin Kenny, the strapper. The White’s teamed with their home bred rig to win the St Arnaud Harness Racing Club’s Central Victorian Trotters Championship Heat (2690m) at Maryborough on Wednesday afternoon. Billy The Brat trotted just 2/10ths outside of Keystone Blue's track record to register his first win in 8 months. The Keystone Salute - Maori Joy six-year-old came from a 40 metre handicap to reel in dashing Charlton-trained four-year-old Mister Castleton (Ellen Tormey) and score by 1.8 metres. Going Comando (Glen Craven) rounded out the top three in a race which saw plenty of breaks. Billy The Brat, an aptly named lovable rogue racehorse stunned the favourite with a whirlwind finish. He was a long shot and returned $27.50 for a one dollar outlay. Billy The Brat’s antics earned him his cute moniker according to owner Susan White. “He is a brat of a horse and always has been, ever since he was a foal” she said. Billy The Brat became an escape artist at a young age jumping the fence of the paddock he was kept in at St Arnaud and that’s when the owners added “The Brat” to his stable name “Billy”. “He was trouble with a capital “T”, we have had him cut (gelded) twice but he still managed to foal a mare and has a high sperm count so that’s why he has been listed as a rig.” He almost didn’t make it to the races because he was a slow learner. “My husband Ian gave him a month and in that month he turned himself around remarkably, so he is still with us,” Susan said. Billy The Brat has had many adventures off the track, even a trip to the Strathfieldsaye pound after he was discovered in someone else’s paddock at Huntly. He has also had a few setbacks to his race career with tendon problems and bone chips. “About two years ago we were told by vets that he would never race again when he injured a tendon,” Susan said. “We had him operated on at Melton and also had the bone chips removed. “Ian and his dad Bill nursed him back and got him racing again. It’s taken a while but he looked great winning this race he did everything right while a lot of others did everything wrong.” Susan led the cheers squad at Maryborough and has vowed to have the whole family cheering on Thursday for the Bendigo final.
In the Central Victorian Championship Pacing heat (2190m) Trevor Preston's Igetaround ($13.30) finished with gusto out wide to beat the $3.30 favourite Washies Chance (Scott Dyer) who took the sprint lane home. Whiskey and Ice (Gavin Lang) finished third in front of Kamwood Jack (Craig Northcott). Just 1.7 metres separated the first four placegetters. A four-year-old by Jennas Beach Boy, Igetaround has won three of seven races this season. The final Central Victorian Championship heats conducted by the Wedderburn Club are raced tomorrow (Friday 21 January) at Maryborough. The Trot heat has attracted a handy field with the Dunnstown trained Zani Bromac resuming from a lengthy spell after winning five of seven races for trainer/driver David Murphy. He will start off the back mark of 40 metres with Chris Lang’s Jacob Oram. In The Pacing Heat, the Armstrong trained Arber also makes a comeback to racing with Chris Alford to drive. Arber won four of five starts and was beaten a neck at his only other appearance in July/August last year. Carisbrook trained Tere T from the Alan Dunsmuir stable has won five races this season and shares the 10 metre back mark in the Championship heat with Mal Whiteford’s Jack Hall and Mark Hayes’ Pull Your Socksup. The $30,000 Pacing Final and the $25,000 Trotting Final raced at Bendigo, Thursday 27 January. - David Aldred

Frosty and Amadman star in Boort Central Vic Championship heats @ Bendigo
Tony Peacock won the 3yo with Patch Maguire
By Len Baker
10 January 2011 - Further heats of harness racing's time honoured Warehouse Sales Central Victorian Pacing and Trotting Championships hosted by the Boort HRC were held at Lord's Raceway Bendigo today, with Frosty Vale taking the trotters heat and roughie Amadmancomesundone the pacers heat.
Four year old Band Of Chips/Auravale mare Frosty Vale bred and raced by Kilmore's Bill Millner, was given the run of the race from the pole trailing the 30 metre backmarker Wont Be The Same and when eased off his back on straightening, ran home strongly over the 2650 metre journey to score from Jindalbie along the sprint lane from four back the markers in a rate of 2-05.8, with Wont Be The Same weakening for third. The pacers heat was a complete blackout for punters, with 5-Y-0 Pass The Mustard/Zealous Stride gelding Amadmancomesundone at Supertab odds of $28.80 saluting for Ballarat breeder/part-owner/trainer Craig Knowles and reinsman David Murphy. Beginning at 100 miles an hour from outside the 10 metre mark in the 2150 metre feature, Amadmancomesundone was in front before the field made formation, with Murphy then taking a trail on the last start Bendigo winner It And A Bit. Given a cosy trip, Amadmancomesundone made full use of the sprint lane to gain the day in a rate of 2-00.1 over the hot favourite Bitobliss which moved from mid-field to park in the open for the final circuit, with It And A Bit a disappointing third. Lavington (Albury) based trainer/driver John Scott a former Victorian, landed the Loddon Transit & Whitmores Bus Lines Pace for C1 class over 2150 metres with ex-New Zealand 5-Y-0 Bettors Delight/Fizzys Rock gelding Muddys Arjayem. An Australian winner on debut at Albury on December 31, Muddys Delight again led from gate two, before coasting to the wire in advance of Henry Ducket which trailed after drawing inside him, with Holmes Image a gap away in third place after following the pair. The mile rate 1-59.4.
Kilmore's Tony Peacock produced a former Kiwi filly by the name of Patch Maguire to capture the Tint Central Bendigo 3-Y-0 Pace over 1650 metres when making her first appearance on Australian soil. Having been placed only once in 17 previous outings, Patch Maguire (Bettors Delight/Miss Jubilee) driven by stable reinsman Damian Wilson was given every opportunity from gate three trailing the poleline pacemaker Black And Sassy and when eased off her back on the final bend, finished full of running to score from her and Its Girl Power (one/two - three wide last lap) in a rate of 1-57.9.

Time honoured Central Victorian Championships under lights at Bendigo
By David Aldred
Bendigo Harness Racing Club will create history in January 2011, hosting the time honoured $30,000 Warehouse Sales Central Victorian Pacing Championship and the $25,000 Trotting Championship at Lords Raceway.
The Finals at Bendigo, 27 January will be raced under lights, the first time the Central Victorian Championship Series deciders have been held at a night meeting.
It is also the first time in the half century history of the race that Bendigo has hosted the Central Victorian Championship Finals. The Central Victorian Pacing Championship is one of the most sought after prizes on the Victorian Country harness racing calendar.
First conducted in 1960 for a stake of 400 pounds, when former Trotting Control Board steward Rod Osborne scored aboard Miracle Echo at Echuca, the status of the race has grown over the years, with many of Victoria’s finest horsemen successful in winning the event which has been held annually throughout (as the name suggests) Central Victoria, with clubs such as Boort, St Arnaud, Wedderburn, Charlton and Maryborough staging the series.
Great horses from the past including Charles Armagh (1962 - Ken Pocock), You Crovottie 1964 – Bill Davies), Lord Setay (1966 – Dick Benger) and Honest Reward (1968 – Ralph Ford) have had their name etched into the history books by winning the race, with noted reinspersons Ted Demmler, Noel Shinn, Clinton Welsh, Max Wishart, Brian Gath, John Caldow, Lance Justice, Kerryn Manning, Chris Alford, Gavin Lang, Bruce Clarke all piloting winners as the race progressed through the ages.
It was decided to include the Central Victorian Trotting Championships into the mix in 1984, with Admiral Aaron (John Koek) being the inaugural victor. Still continuing today, the stature of this race will continue to be part and parcel of the Victorian Country Harness Racing scene.
The 2010 Finals, held by the Wedderburn Club at Maryborough added a special chapter the the history of the Central Victorian Championship Finals. The 2010 Finals were an all family affair for one of Victorian harness racing's biggest names “Lang”. Four family members from three generations of the Lang family shared in the two Central Victorian Championship Final victories. Nagambie trainer Chris Lang went one, two in the $25,000 Group 2 Trotters Final with Go Ahead Makemyday, driven by his son Chris Lang Jr defeating its stable mate Ten Commanders (Chris Lang) by a neck. Both horses were heat winners going into the final. The $30,000 Group 3 Pacing Championship Final was won by Chris’ brother Melton-based Gavin Lang driving the short priced favourite and Bendigo heat winner Im Outtahere to victory for their dad, Melton trainer, Graeme Lang.
